Love is a choice. True... or False?

I say True.

I think that 'Falling in Love' is one of the stupidest sayings there is (when I sit down and really think about it). With the phrase 'Falling in' implies that the opposite, 'Falling out', is possible and widely acceptable. So, basically, when things just aren't working out all I have to say to my partner is: 'Look sweet pea, we had a great run but... I just fell out of love with you.' Why else is Divorce so acceptable? They think that this is their one and only life and when things get rough and hard (it might just be a waste of time trying to fix it anyway) that they'll choose the easier way and just leave. It's selfish. Have you ever heard of True Love being selfish?

Think of love more as an action rather than a feeling. Love becomes a choice. Love is choosing to serve that person. It's choosing to respect them. It's choosing to be selfless. It's choosing to overlook those quirks you just can't stand for the much better ones. It's choosing to sit down and communicate when something is really wrong. It's choosing to work things through. It's choosing to be by their side through thick and thin. When both parties are choosing to Love, it works quite well.

Yes, it does start with a feeling. That head over heels, butterflies in your stomache, googly-eyed, flirtatious feeling. It can start as the feeling of respect for a friend or that cute little feeling for that cutie in math class. It starts. Then you choose. Feelings can fade. They can lose their intensity. And in the end, what do you have left? Hopefully it's Love. Yes, its true that people can do things that can break that Love. Sometimes it's fixable, sometimes it's not. Sadly, that does happen. And sometimes more often than not...

My mother once said at my brother's wedding, "They think they are in love now... Just wait, thirty years down the road after losing jobs, sleepless nights, raising children, countless fights... Then, they will truly know love." Within love is trust, respect, the will to understand, the want to serve. It's a choice. It's an action.
